Simple equation for deciding how much you should spend for rental is
BUDGET - EXPENSES = RENTAL.
Besides deciding which neighborhood you want to live in, the other things that will help you decide how much you should spent on your rental are BUDGET you have and EXPENSES you have to pay each month.
Here is my monthly expense guide for students.
Of course, it depends on your lifestyle and where you shop and eat. You can spend less money that I estimated if you cook most of the meals and do not buy new clothes every week. Likewise, your expenses can be a lot more than this if you do grocery shopping at Whole Foods and have fancy dinners every day!
